I saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at the midnight showing, and I think I was disappointed. It is sitting a little oddly with me, since I realized I don't actually remember that much of the book; the sense I got, though, was that while I enjoyed the movie I saw, I think they made bad choices as to what scenes to leave out and what to include.
I didn't get the scene they added with the Burrow burning down. It was like...really? You left out a part of the book, to make up a scene that had virtually no point, and causes even more pain to people I not only like but know are going to suffer horribly in the next installment? Unnecessary, guys. Also a waste of time. And I wish they had included more of the Tom Riddle memory flashbacks, since understanding Voldemort is so crucial to Harry finding the horcruxes and defeating him.
I'm not a stickler for absolute accuracy in movie translations - in fact, because movies and books are two very different media, I expect there to be difference, and I don't think it's bad. But this was the first time for this series where I felt like the movie makers were trying to tell a different story, rather than the same story in a modified way. I dunno. Maybe they're going to use the two-movie-space for the next movies to put the relevant info in? Maybe that will make the walking in the woods bits more interesting.
I have sorely missed the presence of the older Weasley brothers in these last few films. Seeing as how it's Bill's wedding that's the catalyst for the Trio to set out on their adventure in the first place in the seventh book, I really can't imagine how that's going to play out when we've gotten nothing about Bill or Fleur since number four. Although the way they just slammed the Harry/Ginny stuff into this movie, maybe they'll just pretend that everyone is on board and have the wedding anyway.
But yeah, all in all, I thought Order of the Phoenix was much, much stronger. Up until now they've been good about making movies where, if ou hadn't read the book, you were still cool, and I don't think that's true for HBP. But maybe I'm wrong, I dunno.
In other news, my bird is arriving at the airport tomorrow around 2:30. I'm super excited; I made a vet appointment for Saturday, so I can meet the vet staff and they can meet the bird and make sure everything is ok, and so that if (God forbid) an emergency does happen I won't be taking him to a stranger. Today I'm going to check out a specialty bird store, to see if I can find a playgym for him, so he has something to monkey around on when he's out of the cage. :D
